This is a copy of the original commission (which is probably lost today) sent to France by Governor d'Ogeron at the request of the French Court who enquired about the illegal seizure of a Portuguese ship by Trébutor off the coast of Caracas (June 1670), some months before the taking of Panama. D'Ogeron was part owner of the Trébutor's ship, La Sainte Catherine.

Nous, Gouverneur pour le Roi en l'île de la Tortue et Côte de Saint Domingue, sous l'autorité de Messieurs de la Compagnie des Indes Occidentales, avons donné congé à commission au sieur François Trébutor, capitaine d'une frégate armée en guerre, de faire la guerre aux Espagnols ennemis déclarés de sa Majestée à condition qu'ils amèneront de chaque prise deux principaux officiers pour parcourir à l'adjudication de ladite prise. Enjoignons à tous ceux pour qui notre pouvoir s'étend, de rendre audit capitaine Trébutor et son équipage toutes les assistances possibles s'il en a besoin. Prions et supplions généraux, lieutenants généraux, capitaines, de faire de semblables offres et à faire les mêmes pour eux en cas pareil.
Fait à la Tortue, le 28 de juillet 1669.

Commission to François Trébutor, manned in war at Tortuga
We, Governor for the King on the Isle of Tortuga and Coast of St. Domingue, under the authority of My Lords of the West India Company, have given pass and commission to sieur François Trébutor, commander of a frigate manned in war, to make war to the Spaniards, His Majesty's open enemies, upon condition that he will bring in, from each prize, two chief officers to proceed to the jugment of the said prize. We order to all those under our juridiction to give to the said captain Trébutor and to his crew all possible help if required. We pray and implore generals, lieutenant generals, captains, to do the same and the same will be done for them in such case.
Done at Tortuga, 28 of July 1669.
