blog all the time and the beautiful
0:02
thing is is that his organization he's
0:03
the founder and editor of an
0:04
organization called libertarian
0:06
Christians and um what I think is great
0:08
is that I'm actually not Christian I'm
0:11
not religious at all I have my own
0:12
spirituality but I
0:15
like but what I think is so beautiful
0:18
about libertarian uh Christianity or
0:21
just the libertarian Christians it's not
0:23
actually a brand of Christianity it's
0:25
just it it shows that uh libertarianism
0:28
just defined as a found a found
0:30
foundational uh a foundational
0:32
philosophy that we learn in the
0:35
schoolyard we learn as children that
0:37
just means that we shouldn't hurt people
0:39
we shouldn't commit violence against
0:41
people that are just living peacefully
0:42
even if we don't agree with how they're
0:45
living as long as there's no victim at
0:47
the end of their actions they should be
0:49
able to do whatever they do and and and
0:51
pursue their own Bliss pursue their own
0:53
happiness that's that's all
0:54
libertarianism is it's just nonviolence
0:56
it's the philosophy of nonviolence so
0:58
when you mix that with Christian
0:59
Christianity you see how beautiful that
1:02
like a positive moral uh
1:05
philosophy even if they uh Christians
1:07
sees that somebody may be living in a in
1:10
a some in a in a way that's out of
1:13
alignment with their beliefs they still
1:15
don't use the state and they don't use
1:17
violence to obstruct that they don't
1:20
they don't try to be coercive they
1:22
realize that morality exists only when
1:24
there's volitional action right so you
1:27
can only be a moral animal or a moral
1:29
creature
1:31
if you have a choice to do wrong and
1:33
you've chosen the right you've chosen uh
1:36
you've chosen to live peacefully you
1:37
you've accepted for instance for
1:39
Christians you've accepted Jesus as your
1:41
savior voluntarily right so they're not
1:44
going to use the state to try to
1:46
prohibit immoral action because how
1:48
moral can you be if the only reason
1:50
you're not harming your neighbor is
1:51
because you're scared uh of of or the
1:54
only reason you're not harming your
1:56
neighbor or the only reason you're not
1:57
smoking marijuana is because it's
1:59
illegal there's a lot there's a lot more
2:02
to living in alignment with morality and
2:04
human choices there and the libertarian
2:06
Christian mindset is that that as long
2:09
as there's choice you can be moral and
2:12
you're truly Christian because you've
2:13
actually chosen it not because of the
2:15
negative consequences because it's
2:17
really a part of your heart so without
2:19
further Ado I'll bring up Norman horn a
2:21
Dr Norman horn that is representing
2:24
libertarian Christians and the invent
2:26
Christians for Liberty thank you very
2:28
much wow I had a grand introduction that
2:31
I was going to begin talking about these
2:33
very things except now I've now I don't
2:36
know where I am anymore so I guess I I
2:38
should begin with a well I I've done a
2:42
lot of goofy things over the years in
2:44
the pursuit of Liberty uh I've asked
2:47
some they usually begin with bizarre
2:49
questions such as what if we started a
2:52
student group that you know hosted Ron
2:54
Paul on the main mall of UT what would
2:57
that look like or what if we asked a
3:00
representative if we could write a bill
3:02
for him or something really bizarre like
3:04
that but I want to tell you about really
3:06
this this is the thing that I'm I feel
3:08
like I'm most proud of with regards to
3:10
um thinking and doing Liberty and that
3:13
is uh in 2008 I started a little website
3:17
uh to little to no a claim at the time
3:19
called libertarian christians.com and
3:22
over the course of now five and a five
3:25
and a half plus years almost six years
3:27
now uh it was started in the wake of the
3:30
in the wake of the 2008 presidential
3:32
election so a thousand articles later
3:36
and citations by everything from the
3:38
Village Voice to giz moto to the
3:41
Washington Times uh we're now to the
3:44
point where we have thousands upon
3:46
thousands of people coming to this
3:48
website to learn about the convergence
3:50
of Christian thought and libertarian
3:53
political Theory and it's time now that
3:55
we are uh we're going to expand this
3:57
even more and I want to tell you about
3:59
what we're doing and it's happening this
4:01
weekend and so I want to invite all of
4:03
you to come to the Christians for
4:05
Liberty conference uh that we are
4:07
hosting this Saturday is the main event
4:09
it's at St Edwards University down south
4:12
at roughly Congress in 290 just a little
4:15
bit uh north of that uh it's most of the
4:17
day uh we have a grand Stellar set of
4:21
speakers coming uh from most of my
4:23
authors from libertarian christians.com
4:25
are going to be there uh representative
4:27
David Simpson is going to be there the
4:29
president of the independent Institute
4:30
David thorough is going to be there uh
4:32
Jason rink whom all of you know I'm sure
4:34
is going to be there uh we have some
4:36
people from The acon Institute The
4:38
Institute for Faith working economics
4:40
and I can't even remember them all
4:41
because it's gotten so out of out of
4:43
control uh how many people we got we
4:46
have coming um so what I'm am
4:48
encouraging you to do right now is think
4:51
about whether you're the right person to
4:52
come to this or if you can invite
4:54
somebody who you know who's a Christian
4:56
or a Libertarian or both and who wants
4:59
to learn Le a little more uh this is
5:01
going to be the start of something
5:02
really big uh we are intending to really
5:04
make this the the be the year one
5:07
conference I I fully expect that we're
5:09
going to do this again next year maybe
5:11
it won't be in Austin so hey come now or
5:13
or else it may be too late uh but I want
5:15
you to think about who can you invite
5:17
who can you bring along with you there's
5:19
only a couple of days left to register
5:21
at this point we got a plan for food and
5:24
all this it's a complicated Endeavor if
5:26
you've ever hosted a conference before
5:27
don't it's really hard um but it's a
5:31
it's something that if you if you want
5:32
to come please let us know now I have a
5:35
sign up board here I also have some
5:37
flyers uh to where you can uh take these
5:39
home with you and either give it to a
5:41
friend or just remember uh or if you
5:43
want to just remember libertarian
5:45
christians.com go there and you can uh
5:48
easily easily see how to sign up it is
5:51
$30 for adults it is $15 for students uh
5:55
if you have kids and you want to bring
5:57
them do it it's going to be great um
5:59
we're going to have again tons of time
6:01
to uh to to learn about Liberty from a
6:04
Christian point of view we're going to
6:06
have time tons of time to fellowship
6:08
with your fellow Christian Libertarians
6:10
and there'll be also a few optional
6:12
events that you can that you can hit up
6:13
on the side uh the main event like I
6:16
said is Saturday again it's at St
6:18
Edwards University 9 9:00 a.m. and we
6:21
also have some events going on on Friday
6:23
and Sunday that are just optional we
6:25
have a panel discussion which will
6:27
include our very own Pat Dixon
6:30
over but come anyway yeah I know and
6:33
Jason rink and Lauren dowy who's our
6:36
executive director for the libertarian
6:37
party of Texas uh we'll have a panel
6:39
discussion in ice cream social on Friday
6:41
night uh we have also on Sunday a little
6:44
devotional and open discussion session
6:46
both of those events will be at the
6:47
University Avenue Church of Christ um
6:50
and you're welcome to come to those as
6:52
well so again sign up either with me
6:55
I'll I'll be around for the little
6:56
breakout session please come and take a
6:58
flyer sign sign up do what you can tell
7:01
a friend uh I hope to see you there
7:03
we've got about 100 people coming so far
7:06
from literally around the country and so
7:08
I hope to see you there too thank you I
7:09
wanted to I wanted to stop you right
7:11
here okay because I want you to take
7:12
questions St because we can ask some
7:14
amazing questions for you but I also be
7:15
pre to preface this I want to let you
7:17
all know that tag is actually an
7:19
official sponsor of this event and uh
7:21
the reason why we've chosen a sponsor it
7:23
is because I feel like if we're going to
7:25
create a a more free and prosperous
7:27
Texas we need to to reach Liberty into
7:31
Christianity I mean when Christians when
7:33
Christians can see that Liberty works I
7:36
I just think that it's going to
7:37
accelerate the movement for all of us we
7:39
would endorse and sponsor uh also uh
7:43
Jews for liberty or Muslims for liberty
7:45
or any kind of spirituality that wants
7:47
to uh to to talk about why Liberty
7:49
amplifies moral principles so uh I just
7:52
want you to know we were going to be
7:54
there and I would love for this body to
7:56
join us uh at this event and let me
7:58
follow on that with just one thing I I
8:02
for me I'll tell you something when it
8:05
comes to Liberty Christians really are
8:07
easy
8:08
targets
8:09
okay the philosophy works it coincides
8:13
with our theology it works both on a
8:16
personal level and a spiritual level it
8:19
is very easy to present this to
8:21
Christians and to get them to buy into
8:23
it I cannot tell you how many times I
8:26
get emails I get hate mail too by the
8:28
way but I can't tell you how many emails
8:30
I get from people who said you know I
8:32
never knew how easy this would be to to
8:35
change my philosophy uh it starts just
8:37
by asking the question you know put on
8:39
your Morpheus classes and say what if I
8:41
told you a Christian didn't need to be a
8:44
fascist something like that seriously it
8:48
is that easy at times and I I kid you
8:50
not this is this is this this is the
8:52
beginning so thank you very much so let
8:54
me ask you uh a two-part question one
8:56
what is the libertarian Christian answer
8:58
to
9:00
what what about gay marriage and what
9:02
about marijuana because it seems like
9:04
Christians align with the right a lot
9:06
and they want to use the state to
9:07
prevent those things so what is the
9:08
libertarian Christian answer or just the
9:11
authentic Christian answer I think well
9:14
first of all the I think the authentic
9:15
Christian answer to any type of drug
9:17
related question is that the state
9:19
should not be involved uh drugs are a
9:21
health issue not a legal issue um that
9:24
seems to be very clear God created the
9:26
the this world to be good it seems
9:29
really unlikely that some of these
9:31
substances should be just considered
9:32
automatically bad um so that's that's a
9:35
very easy one for us although I admit
9:38
it's it's sometimes is a hard sell for
9:39
them but it takes it sometimes it takes
9:41
time um with regards to marriage uh we
9:45
do believe that marriage is a Christian
9:47
institution uh it is also a social
9:49
institution however and people should be
9:51
free to interact and that in the way
9:52
they see fit uh we have we believe in
9:55
free association and if you believe in
9:57
free association then it should be no
9:59
problem to have uh to to uh to set up
10:02
those associations and contracts the way
10:04
that you see
10:05
fit any questions please I just wanted
10:09
to add that on that the uh State should
10:11
not be involved it's between you and
10:14
your gu or your church yeah it should be
10:17
implied in fact by by the statement that
10:20
we are free to do these and set set up
10:22
these contracts as we said fit that the
10:24
state has no business being involved in
10:26
in the regulation of those
10:28
contracts and it's an all day conference
10:30
are meals included yes did I not say
10:32
that I'm sorry we're providing food and
10:34
it's going to be great in fact you're
10:36
getting way more than $30 worth let me
10:38
tell
10:41
you what's the topic of the panel on
10:43
Friday night oh oh so the topic of the
10:45
panel on Friday night is uh is really
10:48
just sort of an I I came up with the
10:50
goofy idea of let's call it a AAAA ask
10:53
Austin activists anything
10:57
so anyway so yeah it's sort of focused
10:59
on activism um and and in particular how
11:03
we as Christians can interact in our
11:05
communities in our churches to be a
11:07
positive force for
11:08
liberty y um you were you had your hand
11:12
up first sorry Dana I actually um I'm
11:15
part of libertarian party and we're
11:16
having actually hosted by Tim Martinez
11:18
here we're floating the river on Sunday
11:21
so I wanted to say after your devotional
11:23
if you would like to invite people to
11:25
come down to the canal River and Flo
11:27
with us baptism aome
11:31
we have a
11:33
little
11:36
sorry yeah um I think that you know
11:39
recently we've seen so much infiltration
11:41
of the state in churches nowadays and
11:44
it's like it's like a phenomenal you
11:45
just see like so much state is the
11:48
answer and you know the state is
11:50
becoming synonymous Christianity is
11:53
there going to be talks kind of
11:54
addressing that that real concern and
11:59
the attention of this uh of this
12:02
conference or will that be highlighted
12:04
focus on at
12:05
all in a variety of ways yes
12:09
um the question had has a lot of levels
12:13
yeah
12:14
sorry it's unfortunate the way that that
12:17
uh that the state has shall we say
12:20
infiltrated various elements of the
12:22
churches whether that is through
12:23
faith-based programs or through military
12:26
recruitment or through variety of
12:29
different things even even to you know
12:31
flags being placed at the front of
12:33
sanctuaries as if that were somehow part
12:35
of our you know Liturgy of some kind um
12:39
so that will be addressed in a variety
12:41
of ways uh but our fundamental you'll
12:45
see if you grab one of my business cards
12:46
it'll say libertarian christians.com the
12:49
state is not the kingdom of
12:50
God and that has been the Mantra since
12:53
the beginning because fundamentally what
12:56
we believe is that the kingdom of God is
12:58
Not not of this world and that it
13:00
operates fundamentally differently than
13:02
the kingdoms of this world and that
13:05
whereas the kingdoms of Earth and the
13:07
rulers want to Lord it over everybody
13:09
and try and control that the Christian
13:13
opportunity and our and our Mantra is
13:16
not to be like that at all but to serve
13:19
and that service takes on a lot of
13:21
different forms it might take on the
13:22
form of Charity it might take on the
13:24
form of business it might take on the
13:26
form of ministry but that's a
13:28
fundamentally different set of
13:30
operational principles than the way that
13:32
the state operates and if you accept
13:35
that premise then I think the the only
13:38
logical conclusion then is that the most
13:40
consistent expression of Christian
13:42
political thought is
13:48
libertarianism so last but not least
13:52
libertarian christians.com go there you
13:55
can sign up there come to me I can sign
13:57
you up here
13:59
and bring a friend this Saturday this
14:02
Satur this Saturday this Saturday okay
14:05

14:07
to bring up
